Penguins blow lead and stay winless with a loss to Southern Illinois


Junior running back Jaleel McLaughlin rushed for a career-high 124 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns, but the Youngstown State football dropped a hard-fought 30-22 decision to No. 11 Southern Illinois. 


With the loss the Penguins fall to 0-3 while SIU improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.


Mark Waid rushed for 73 yards on 23 carries and completed 10-of-24 passes for 94 yards.


Defensively, Grant Dixon led the Penguins with 10 total tackles and Griffin Hoak had nine tackles.


SIU's Nic Baker threw for 139 yards on 13-of-18 passing with two touchdown passes and ran for 32 yards with a rushing touchdown while Romeir Elliott ran for 97 yards.


Youngstown State visits South Dakota State, Saturday, March 13, in Brookings, S.D. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. Eastern and will be broadcast on 570 WKBN.
