Scrappers' Media Day at the Mall
Tuesday afternoon, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers held their Media Day at the Eastwood Mall, in Niles. It's an exciting season as this will be the second year of the MLB Draft League, where some of the nation's top draft prospects will compete to gain recognition for July's MLB Draft.
I was there covering the Scrappers and interviewing a handful of individuals: two coaches and two players.
Homer Bush and Craig Antush were the coaches Interviewed, while Eric Sapp and Mark Herron Jr. were the players that were interviewed.
Bush was a 1998 World Series Champion with the New York Yankees and has had a long and successful baseball career as both a player and coach.
This will be his first year as the Manager of the Scrappers.
Craig Antush is in his 17th season with Mahoning Valley, his second on the field.
Eric Sapp, an alumnus of Southeast High School in Ravenna joins the team after anchoring the pitching staff at Gannon University this past season. Gannon, a Divison II school, where Sapp went 9-1 with a 2.21 ERA, where he struck out 99 batters in 77.1 innings. For his efforts, Sapp was the PSAC West Division Pitcher of the Year.
Outfielder, Mark Herron Jr. is a 2016 graduate of Warren Harding High School where he was a standout on the baseball team. He played the majority of his collegiate career at Delaware State before becoming a graduate transfer at Xavier University in Louisiana. In Herron's last full season in 2021 at the Divison I level, he started 35 games and hit .237, with 4 HR, 9 RBIs, 5 doubles, 2 triples, and went 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts.
